The German play by Birch-Pfeiffer is freely adapted from the French novel Notre-Dame de Paris by Victor Hugo. The file contains 14 handwritten role books (actors' scripts) related to performances of the play in Philadelphia from the late 1870s to the early 1890s. The following roles are represented: Gervaise; Madleine Meuniers; Zigeunerhauptmann; Claude-Frello; Quasimodo, Glöckner von Notre Dame; Hauptmann; Pierre Gringoire; Chopin Troulfou, ein Bettler; Renard, Krämerin; Oudarde; Esmaralda; Troulfou; Bauer & Tutt; and erster Spieler. The role books apparently belonged to the theater lending library of Theodor Bloch; 7 of them were written out by and bear the signature of Bloch. One role book (Claude-Frello) bears the stamp: "M. Dardenne"--Possibly indicating that it was written out by the actress Marie Dardenne, who was active in the German-language theater of Philadelphia in the late 1870s through the 1880s. The latter role book gives as the play's subtitle: "Romantisches Drama in 6 Tableau" (the other role books do not show a subtitle). The names of actors written on role books reflect the casts of at least two different performances.
